Hello Warrane Community,
It’s hard to believe we are already at the end of Term 3! It has been a busy term, especially over the past fortnight with the Swimming Safety and Awareness program for Grades 3–6. This important program equips our students with essential skills to stay safe in and around waterways. It has been wonderful for staff to witness the growth and enthusiasm of all participants.
At the start of Term 4, Prep and the two Grade 1/2 classes will participate in a week of Water Orientation, beginning on the first day back. Families have received a letter with further details about the program.
We are also pleased to welcome Mrs. Wood back from leave next term, when she will resume teaching her Grade 3/4 class. We sincerely thank Miss Doyle for her dedicated work while Mrs. Wood has been away. Miss Doyle will continue to support students on a part-time basis next term in a variety of roles.
Wishing everyone a happy and safe holiday break — here’s hoping for some sunshine!
Warm regards, Sarah Hoban
I acknowledge and pay respect to the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community as the traditional and original owners of lutruwita/trowunna (Tasmania) and as the enduring custodians of the lands, seas, air and waterways. I pay respect to Elders past and present.

Reminder: Hats Required in Term 4
As we head into Term 4, please be reminded that all students must wear a hat when outside during school hours. This is part of our SunSmart policy to ensure students are protected from harmful UV exposure.
No Hat, Shaded Play:
Students who do not have a hat will be required to stay under cover during outdoor activities, including recess and lunch.
School hats are available for purchase at the office. Please ensure your child brings a clearly labelled hat to school each day.
Thank you for your support in keeping our students safe and sun-smart!
Lifting Literacy
We are committed to helping every student become a confident, capable reader. That’s why we use a structured and evidence-based approach to teaching literacy, built around what’s known as the Big Six.
What are the Big Six?
- Oral Language – The ability to speak, listen, and understand the sounds we use when we talk.
- Phonological Awareness – Recognising the sounds in our speech.
- Phonics – Understanding how letters and sounds work together.
- Vocabulary – Knowing and using a wide range of words.
- Fluency – understanding the meaning of words and sentences as they are being read.
- Comprehension – using the other five skills to understand what is being read.
The Big Six are not just skills for early readers or young students. You play an important role in your child’s literacy development. Talking with your child, reading together, playing word games, and asking questions about stories are all powerful ways to support what your child is learning at school.
Year 5/6 S/B Persuasive Writing & Inquiry
What changes would make our school an even better place?
Whose voices need to be heard when changes and decisions are being made?
How can we use facts and research to support the ideas we care about?
What issues in our school or community matter most to us and how can we take action/make positive change?
This term, Year 5/6 S/B has been exploring persuasive writing through an exciting inquiry regarding ‘change’. We started by reading articles about real-world issues that affect us and matter to our community—everything from social media bans in Australia to topics that impact students at school. This got us thinking about the changes we’d like to see.
We chose some topics we really care about and wanted to take action on:
- A school canteen – offering more healthy and diverse food options to suit everyone’s tastes and dietary needs.
- More Five Nights at Freddy’s books in the library – for students who love this popular series.
- Gardening as a choices option – to learn new skills and connect with nature.
- Cooking as a specialist subject – to develop practical skills and explore creativity in the kitchen.
To make our arguments strong, we conducted surveys to see what other students think, researched facts and studies and started writing persuasive letters to people in our school community. Our goal is to convince them to consider our ideas and make positive changes.
Through this, we’ve been practising persuasive writing, learning to back up our ideas with evidence and discovering how powerful our voices can be in shaping our school and community.

Can You Manage a Budget for a Week?
This week, 5/6 S/B explored the question ‘What is it like to manage money in everyday life?’
Students were highly engaged as they stepped into the role of independent budgeters, working with a weekly income (based on minimum wage after tax) to make real-life financial decisions.
Throughout this learning experience, students:
- Researched and selected rental properties
- Compared phone plans and chose a Wi-Fi provider
- Planned grocery shopping
- Calculated daily transport costs
- Worked out the average weekly cost for electricity and water for one- and two-person households and included these in their budgets
- Budgeted for weekend entertainment (if they had funds remaining)
- Attempted to set aside savings for the future
Inspired by the ABC TV series Teenage Boss, students explored the difference between needs and wants, while practising how to balance priorities to make their budget work.
This inquiry connected Mathematics, HASS and financial literacy, giving students a practical, hands-on experience in planning, problem-solving and money management—skills that they will hopefully carry with them well beyond the classroom.

1/2 Yellow Class – Together at the Table
To celebrate the end of Term 3, our 1/2 Yellow class welcomed their families to join them for a special shared meal. This marks our final “together at the table” for the term.

Hands On Learning
During Term 3, two group of students were picked to work with Ollie on some hands-on learning activities. One group hand carved (whittled) spoons from Huon Pine, while the other group made a bird box for the native Eastern Rosella that can be found in the area.
Eastern Rosella Bird Box
The Eastern Rosella is a native bird endemic to southeastern Australia, and therefore can be
found at Warrane Primary. Building them an artificial nest box provides them with safe housing and a place for breeding due to the lack of tree hollows caused by land clearing.
The pieces of the bird box were measured and cut to size. We used marine plywood which is perfect for projects exposed to the elements.
Students in 5/6 have been participating in the Parents and Kids Together (PaKT) program this term run by Home Base.
The program is designed to foster strong partnerships between students, families, and the school.
Participating students in 5/6 created ‘Cubbies’ with their special person this term, with their final products showcasing their artistic talents.
Next term, PaKT will be running sessions for students and families in the 1/2 classes. Expressions of interest will go home early in Week 1, with commencement of the program in Week 3.

Authorisation for Administration of Student Medication forms need to be filled out for both prescription and non-prescription medications. You can find blank forms attached below or request them from the school office. Form A is for non-prescription medicine and can be filled in by a parent. Form B is for prescription medicine and needs a GP or pharmacist input. Students needing short-term medication like antibiotics or Panadol must submit these forms before staff can administer them.
All medical forms must be updated yearly and signed by the child’s healthcare provider. If the current forms are less than two years old, a letter from your GP can confirm their validity.
Forms:
- Authorisation for Administration of Student Medication Form
- Epilepsy Medical Action Plan
- Allergy Medical Action Plan
- Diabetes Medical Action Plan
- Asthma Medical Action Plan
- General Medical Management Plan
For more information please contact warrane.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au

We have students who are allergic to nuts and eggs. As this allergic reaction can be life threatening, the school asks that these products are not brought to school in children’s lunch boxes or for class celebrations.
Items not to be brought to school include but are not limited to - all nut products, peanut butter, Nutella, peanut oil in margarines and all egg products.
It is important that all classes observe this nut and egg aware policy due to the danger of an allergic child coming into contact with residue left by other classes. The parents/carers and staff appreciate your co-operation in this serious matter.

All students are welcome.
A reminder that families are required to use the larger family carpark for school drop off and pick up.
The smaller carpark near the early years classes is for staff and service vehicles only. It does not have enough parking for families and the visibility of the surrounding area and access in and out during busy times creates an added safety risk to students.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with this.
