HANDS ON LEARNING

Hands On Learning

During Term 3, two group of students were picked to work with Ollie on some hands-on learning activities. One group hand carved (whittled) spoons from Huon Pine, while the other group made a bird box for the native Eastern Rosella that can be found in the area.

Eastern Rosella Bird Box

The Eastern Rosella is a native bird endemic to southeastern Australia, and therefore can be
found at Warrane Primary. Building them an artificial nest box provides them with safe housing and a place for breeding due to the lack of tree hollows caused by land clearing.

The pieces of the bird box were measured and cut to size. We used marine plywood which is perfect for projects exposed to the elements.

Huon Pine Spoons

Huon pine scraps were sourced locally, and the

students carved, gouged, sanded, and oiled them to create spoons.
